Abstract

This collection consists of photographs collected by University of Tennessee student James S. Corbitt. The subjects depicted include the UT campus directly after the Civil War (including the earthworks built for the Battle of Fort Sanders), the 1931 College of Engineering faculty (including Nathan Dougherty and Red Matthews), Ferris Hall, football games on Shields-Watkins Field, and unidentified UT faculty members.

Edward Lynn Letter

Abstract

This letter was written on December 25-27, 1863, in Blains Cross Roads, Tenn., by Assistant Surgeon Edward Lynn of the 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, to his sister. In the letter, Lynn writes of the Siege of Knoxville and the Battle of Fort Sanders, as well as on meeting Parson William Brownlow.

Ephraim Tuttle Letter

Abstract

In this letter to his parents, Owen and Permelia (Cooper) Tuttle, Corporal Ephraim Tuttle discusses the Battle of Fort Sanders. He includes descriptions of Confederate casualties, estimating that the Confederate forces lost about 360 soldiers with approximately the same number taken prisoner. Tuttle goes on to detail skirmishes at Bean's Station, Blain's Crossroads, and Rockford and mentions the lack of supplies and struggles with commanding officers.

Abstract

This collection consists of a photocopied manuscript of Charles Ewing's poem "Fort Sanders." Written in 1940, "Fort Sanders" is a descriptive work that chronicles the events at the Battle of Fort Sanders, which took place in Knoxville in 1863.

Irwin Shepard Letter to Philander P. Claxton

Claxton, Irwin Shepard (Secretary of the National Education Association) mentions an upcoming meeting in Denver and describes his service at the Battle of Fort Sanders during the Civil War. He tells Claxton that Knoxville, and especially the grounds of the University of Tennessee, hold a sacred place in his memory and recalls serving on the Fort's parapet during the battle, helping to collect the dead and wounded, and participating in a burning party that...

Personal correspondence between Union soldier Alexander B. Richards and his sister, Emaline Butcher of Murphysboro, Illinois, dated February 14, 1864. He details the Battle of Knoxville and Fort Sanders (Tenn.) which took place on November 29, 1863 and his trek from Chattanooga with H Co. Illinois 27th Infantry.
